Some thoughts on Proverbs, our book of the month.

Proverbs 4:7 says, "Wisdom is the principle thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding." People focus a lot on "getting" these days, but in all our getting, do we really get what matters most? The scriptures tell us to get understanding, for understanding and wisdom are more precious than all the material goods we could acquire. vs. 10 goes on to say, "Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, and the years of your life will be many." That sounds like something worth pursuing to me! Hope you agree! Seek out His wisdom in the scriptures today!

  1. Matt 13:7, in the parable of the sower, states:

7 Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.

Jesus goes on to explain the meaning of the parable in v22:

22 As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.

One of the most difficult things that we as Western Christians face is allowing our focus to be on our surroundings, the things of our "world". It is far too easy to get our "needs" confused in this type of environment and allow our focus to be on the "wisdom" of our culture rather than the Wisdom of God.

While God may allow us numerical years on this earth, how many years have we spent wasting those years chasing silly things that amount to nothing?

  2. Very true Michael, in fact Peter writes in I Peter 4:3, "...we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles--when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties and abominable idolatries." We've wasted enough time on things like that in the past, as Paul says in Ephesians 5:14-16 redeem the time! "...Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light. See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil." Praise God for His grace! Amen?
