Reading Assignment for March

This month we will be focusing on the Old Testament book of Ezra. The Lord had determined a set time for Israel's exile from the land and that time was coming to an end. As we read Ezra we will learn about what it was like for those who went back to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple. Let's read with an eye to learn about the work that the Lord wants to do in each of our lives today!

  1. Don't make the mistake of dismissing this book due to the long lists of names. The Lord was bringing his people back to their land, leading them to rebuild the temple. There are some important lessons that we can glean from this record. I love that Ezra and those with him were concerned about being consistent in their witness to the point that they didn't ask for an armed escort but trusted in the Lord to keep them safe on their journey!

  2. There was a couple of years where I was involved with a "take authority over" type of theology. Where I was taught I had the authority to command the devil to do this or that. Where I believed that I was given authority over sickness and such.

The book of Ezra was (among other places in the Bible) very instrumental in allowing to see more clearly the sovereignty of God working daily in our lives, that God was guiding and leading me even when I could not see it.

When the Ezra came to the river and proclaimed a fast and prayer for God's safe guidance on their journey, he didn't necessarily have to wait on a "word" from the Lord. Ezra was able to trust God had heard their prayer and begin on his journey.

Although there is no doubt in my mind God still speaks to His people today, I can trust God is hearing my prayers and guiding through the circumstances of my life even when I can't necessarily see it clearly. I can trust and rest in His sovereignty.

Ezra, Neahmiah, and Job are some of the best books to read when we are doubting whether God is there and hearing our prayers.
